The NASDAQ Composite:
The NASDAQ Composite is an index of the stock market that has all the common stocks and securities such as tracking stocks, ADRs and limited partnership interests that are listed on the NASDAQ Stock Exchange. This means that, the NASDAQ Composite has more than three thousand components in it. It is very popular in the United States of America. It has a very vast following concerning the indication of the performances of technology related stocks and other growth related companies.
Launching of the NASDAQ Composite:
The NASDAQ Composite was launched in the year 1971 with 100 points as its base value. The weighted market capitalization method is the basis on which the NASDAQ Composite index is calculated. The eligibility of listing on the NASDAQ Composite is the previous listing of the concerned company on the NASDAQ Stock Market. Closed end funds, exchange traded funds, convertible debentures, warrants, preferred stocks, units, rights and derivative securities are not allowed in the NASDAQ Composite.
On 17th July, in the year 1995, the index achieved the 1,000 mark. The lowest index fall was in the month of October, in year 1974. It was at 54 points that time which represented a drop of 45%. On 10th march, 2000 the index reached an intra day trading high of 5,132.52 and closed at 5,046 which was an all time high figure. The dot com market bubble ended with the starting of the decline of the markets. The NASDAQ Composite reached the 2,700 point mark on 12th July, in the year 2007. |
